Feevale’s history began on June 28th, 1969, when ASPEUR (Associação Pró-Ensino Superior) was founded in Novo Hamburgo.
On June 28th, Feevale University celebrated its 45th anniversary. The Associação Pró-Ensino Superior in Novo Hamburgo (Aspeur) was created in 1969 from the union of public power, private enterprise and the regional community, resulting in the present Federação de Estabelecimentos de Ensino Superior established in Novo Hamburgo. Even though the institution has become a university, its denomination remains the same due to strong reputation that the organization has acquired over the years.
The engagement of the community, the institution´s awareness with the regional development and its commitment to build a policy that affirms the role of a university has been noticed throughout Feevale´s history. Today, there is no doubt that Feevale is fully committed with the regional sustainable development and that the organization´s identity has been built based on a concept of a communitarian and innovative university, always seeking to improve quality of life, to preserve the environment and to reduce inequality and social injustice.
The strengthening of the scientific research is also one of the purposes of the institution. With initiatives that encourage research projects and post-graduation courses, the university aims to foster the scientific, technological and humanistic development in harmony with the national policies; to promote the institutional cooperation; and to qualify higher education by forming skilled professionals in order to increase the regional scientific and technological potential.
In 1999, Feevale was accredited, by the Ministry of Education, as a university college. This achievement enabled the university to speed up its processes, increasing courses and launching new courses. In 2010, the institution became a university and this important step was a great deed for the academic community. The moment represented the result of long effort that had begun more than forty years ago. In 2011, the university inaugurated the Feevale Theater which has provided a cultural and multipurpose space for Vale do Rio dos Sinos region and has placed the region on the route of great regional, national and international shows.
Timeline and community
At the place where today is Feevale Câmpus I, there was a school called Escola São Jacó which belonged to the order of the Brothers Maristas, an important partner of the institution. In 1989, the first High School was founded and, in 1994, the institution started providing education for students from five years on. Today, it is called Escola de Educação Básica Feevale –Escola de Aplicação and it includes Children´s Education, Elementary Education, high School and Professional Education.
Regional Progress
Luiz Ricardo Bohrer, president of Aspeur
“The idea of setting up a Higher Education Institution in Novo Hamburgo came from an educational census carried out at a time that the available data pointed a general figure of 800 people with higher education for a population around 45 thousand people. The main focus was that if there were a great number of inhabitants with higher education, the city and the region would have the opportunity to try a greater growth and it has been confirmed over the years. The institution has been able to take advantage of the important moments over these 45 years in favor of the regional development, promoting courses that have helped Vale dos Sinos region to be in an outstanding position today. Since the beginning of its history, Feevale University has had a stronger communitarian spirit. The university´s assets and investments are administrated by a board of trustees, a board of directors and a tax council – made up of 40 people from the local community who often meet to deal with the future of the institution. Another issue of extreme importance for the region has come up: Novo Hamburgo is being considered a possible city to host a medical school. Feevale University has supported the initiative and has provided technical assistance as the institution believes it can come true. Thus, we will continuously collaborate for the regional growth because it is the main role of an Educational Institution.”
Accomplishing our mission
Inajara Vargas Ramos, Feevale´s Interim Rector.
Throughout its 45-year history, Feevale University has accomplished its mission which is to promote the production of knowledge and its democratization as well to promote the formation of the individual, contributing to the development of society. We have also been committed to build a university that is fully consonant with its time, with its context and its challenges; a university that complies with its emancipatory role; that develops long term concepts and actions, less urgent and immediate; a university that promotes a cooperative globalization based on solidarity and that is able to question itself and society.
